What
is... Plant
and Soil Sciences?
Environmental
Soil Science
What we call "dirt" is actually one of our most
valuable natural resources. Soils are rich in history,
as well as in nutrients, contaminants, and natural life!
Environmental Soil Science looks at our expansive soil
system and its relationship to environmental quality and
plant growth. Everything we do on earth, from fertilizing
lawns and growing food to creating garbage, ultimately
can impact the soil and water around us. Soil scientists
work to ensure our natural resources can sustain the quality
of life we all enjoy.
Landscape
Horticulture
This intriguing combination of art and science is perfect
for the student who likes being creative as well as being
outdoors. With a variety of specialty areas like plant
identification, landscape design, plant propagation and
cultivation, and nursery and garden-center management,
you can take your interests whichever way you like. At
a microscope, in the greenhouse, at the drawing table,
or in the gardens, there are many places for the landscape
horticulturist.
Plant
Protection
As the song goes," it's not easy being green." Insect problems,
diseases, and weeds make life challenging for plants.
Plant Protection looks at these important areas, blending
entomology, pathology, and weed science, and educates students
in the field of integrated pest management. With an emphasis
on strategies that are compatible with the environment
and agriculture, this major is a natural fit for the student
who is looking for an applied environmental career. Plant
Science
This major is a blend of our plant-related majors, allowing
students to create the plant-based curriculum that is
of most interest. Students who enjoy everything about
plants often find this major gives them the flexibility
to pursue their diverse interests. For
