• NATIVITY: New York, south to Alabama. In the piedmont and coastal plain of the Eastern US.
• GROWTH HABIT: Small to medium sized, irregular tree.
• SIZE: 15 - 40'.
• HARDINESS: Zone 4 - 8.
• CULTURE: Tolerates poor, dry soils unlike most pines. Does well in sandy soils as well as clay.
• LANDSCAPE USE: A plant for tough situations, typically used in groups. Makes an interesting small specimen if you do not object to the typical yellow foliage.
• FOLIAGE: Needles in fascicles of two, 1 1/2 - 3" long and typically twisted. Needles typically yellowish green in color.
• BUDS: Ovoid, approximately 1/2" long.
• BARK: Reddish-brown in color.
• FRUIT: Cone 1 1/2 - 3" long by 1 - 1 1/2" wide. A sharp hooked barb present on the back of each cone scale.
