Juniperus glabra
- BOTANICAL NAME: Juniperuss glabra
- PRONUNCIATION: ju-NIP-er-us GLAY-bruh
- COMMON NAME: Smooth Cypress
- FAMILY: Cupressaceae
- NATIVITY: Central Arizona.
- GROWTH HABIT: Pyramidal to broad pyramidal somewhat open and graceful.
- SIZE: 30 - 45' tall.
- HARDINESS: Zone (6?) 7 - 9.
- CULTURE: Sun, with well-drained soil. Plants relish hot and dry conditions.
- LANDSCAPE USE: Specimen and large group plantings. May be used for screens in hot, dry climates.
- FOLIAGE: Leaves arranged in four rows, adpressed, scale-like and overlapping, 1/16" long. Apex of leaf sharp pointed, leaves typically blue green or gray green, highly resinous. Branchlets opposite or alternate and held at roughly 90o to the main branch.
- BUDS:
- BARK: Bark smooth (unlike the species), cherry red to mahogany brown.
- FRUIT: Cone globose, 1 - 1 1/4" in diameter, with 6 - 8 scales.
- PROPAGATION: Seed, cuttings.
- PESTS: None serious.
- CULTIVARS:
- `Carolina Sapphire' - intense blue foliage and rapid rate of growth.
