Research Interest

My research is focused on the bioavailability and speciation of heavy metals in bulk and rhizosphere soil. The rhizosphere consists of the few millimeters of soil in the immediate vicinity of plant roots, and directly influenced by root activity and associated soil microorganisms. I study mechanisms of heavy metals release in the presence of organic ligands commonly found in the rhizosphere (e.g. plant root exudates), and attempt to link these processes with metal speciation in contaminated soils. One objective is to better understand metal acquisition by hyperaccumulating plants in an effort to optimize phytoremediation (green remediation).
