Professor to serve as IUSS president

 A distinguished professor in the department of plant and soil sciences has been named president-elect of the International Union of Soil Sciences.

 Donald Sparks, department chairman of plant and soil sciences in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, will become the organization's first president from the United States in more than 40 years.

 Sparks, who teaches and researches soil chemistry at the university, said that during his four-year term, he will oversee an organization of approximately 40,000 members from more than 120 countries.

 Sparks, who currently chairs the soil chemistry division of the IUSS, said he will become president in August 2002 at the IUSS world congress in Bangkok, Thailand.
