Michael J. Borda, Ph.D.

Statement of Research Interests
The ultimate goal of my research is to develop a detailed understanding of the mechanisms and processes that govern important redox chemistry (i.e., electron transfer processes) in the environment.  This approach requires the integration of aqueous geochemistry and surface chemistry.  Understanding the global cycling of electrons is of paramount importance in understanding the chemistry of natural systems, because it is the promotion and inhibition of electron transfer reactions that are crucial to understanding topics such as: chemical kinetics, surface chemistry, photochemistry, as well as energy transfer in biologic systems.  I use a number of analytical tools, e.g., vibrational spectroscopy, ultra-high vacuum photoelectron spectroscopy, and synchrotron based spectroscopies along with low temperature geochemical techniques, to explain reactivity at the mineral-water interface.
