Project Mission

The University of Delaware College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (UD-CANR) and St. Andrew’s School (SAS) began working together in the fall of 2005 to develop a long-standing partnership that would enhance the management and use of the agricultural lands, the campus landscape, and the natural ecosystems at St. Andrew’s.

Thanks to the support of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS), a wide range of demonstration and research projects engaging faculty, staff, and students from UD and SAS are underway.

  • SAS students get fresh ideas for IPs
  • A Summer, 2009 intern is now working with St. Andrew's faculty and administration to develop and test hands-on lessons for students who will take on Environmental Science independent projects (IPs) in the 2009-2010 academic year.  Karen Wiener will also work with UD Plant & Soil Sciences and Entomology & Wildlife Ecology faculty to design the curriculum.   • St. Andrew's Students and UD Scientists Team Up
  • Afforestation Effects on Carbon Sequestration
  • In fall of 2008, St. Andrew's School converted more than 100 acres of farmland to riparian buffer by planting over 140,000 trees.  As part of their Environmental Science curriculum this spring, SAS students and faculty have paired with UD scientists to gather baseline data to determine the long-term environmental benefits of the afforestation effort.  Together, we took 600 soil core samples which will now be analyzed for organic matter content and other parameters!
