BICYCLE
SAFETY
|
|
The Newark area has experienced
a number of bicycle accidents, including several recent fatalities.
Bikers, please follow these rules. Drivers, please be courteous to
bikers and pedestrians.
- Bicycles follow
the same rules of the road as cars; ride with traffic, on
the right side of the road; stop at red lights and
stop signs.
- Do not ride on
the Main Street sidewalk or the S. College Ave. pedestrian
overpass. The minimum fine is $41.50.
- Ride defensively,
even if you have the right of way, a car is bigger.
- Wear a helmet. A
lot of money has been spent to fill your brain with knowledge.
Protect that investment.
- Bike lanes are
designated with a solid white line and a bike icon. Bikers, stay
on the right side of the solid line; drivers, stay out of the bike
lane.
- Riding of
bicycles (and rollerskating/blading, skateboarding) is prohibited
in University buildings.
- Bicycle riding
(and rollerskating/blading, skateboarding) is only permitted on
walkways and ramps when the operator does not create a hazard to
themselves or others.
- Bicycles may not
be chained to a stair rail or block a building entrance or
exit.
