The Plant and Soil Sciences safety committee, chaired by Jerry Hendricks, assumed responsibility for this facility about a year ago. They initially performed a detailed facility inspection, at which time they discovered numerous environmental and safety concerns. Thanks to the committee's recommendations and continued oversight, funding was identified through the Dean's office and major renovations were completed in the facility. For example, flaking paint was identified throughout the facility, and upon testing was identified to contain lead. All of lead containing paint was removed during the renovation. In addition, the functionality of the workspace was improved to include an ADA compliant restroom and upgrades to the mechanical systems. Lastly, the electrical system was updated eliminating numerous safety concerns as well as a serious potential shock hazard.
The result of this combined effort of the safety committee, the Dean's office, and Facilities is a much improved greenhouse for their research projects that does not pose a health or safety risk to workers or visitors. Many thanks go out to the safety committee for identifying major safety hazards, and a renovation committee overseeing the project. Keep up the good work!
