SUSTAINING THE WORLD THROUGH SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Species of Special Concern

There are over 50 delphacid species of economic importance (see table below).  Of these, the most important species are the brown planthopper (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens), a pest of rice in the Old World tropics and adjacent temperate regions; Sogatella and Tagosodes species (the white-backed planthoppers, the white-backed planthopper [WBPH] is Sogatella furcifera); also on rice; the small brown planthopper (SBPH, Laodelphax striatellus) on rice and cereals; Saccharosydne saccharivora, Eumetopina flavipes, and various Perkinsiella species (especially P. saccharicida sometimes called that sugarcane planthopper, on sugarcane), and the corn planthopper (Peregrinus maidis).

Important planthoppers not found in North America are:

1. The brown planthopper (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens)
