Natural Enemies

Delphacid predators and parasites are of particular interest to find out what natural enemies might be used to control delphacids and to better understand planthopper population dynamics. The most important predators of delphacids include (but is not limited to) spiders, ground beetles, lady beetles, predaceous mirids, damsel bugs and other generalized predators.  Perhaps spiders are the most important, but mirids (Tytthus spp.) have been shown to be very important in some settings.  Egg predators include microhymenopteran wasps such as Encyrtidae, Eulophidae and Mymaridae.  The most important parasites are Strepsiptera (Elenchidae and Halictophagidae), dryinid wasps, and big-headed flies (Pipunculidae). Dryinid and strepsipteran parasites are often seen in museum specimens and in field populations.

Ricehoppers.net has compiled this working summary of parasites of rice pests (here for PDF) and here: http://ricehoppers.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/interim-report-ii-appendix-1-gm-gurr.pdf.

Recently, Dr. Eduardo Virla and Dra. Erica Luft of the Laboratorio de Enemigos Naturales de Plagas Agrícolas del NOA at the División Control Biológico de Plagas, CONICET, Tucumán, Argentina (http://www.biocontroltucuman.com.ar/) provided me with a more complete list of delphacid parasites.  Dr. Virla has a webpage on Neotropical Dryinidae (www.parasitoides.com.ar) (as of this writing it is down because of server problems).  The list was send with links to the dryinid species pages, which I will reinsert at next opportunity.  It is with immense gratitude for their work that I provide this parasite list and references below.

Below is a now dated compilation of specific records of predators and parasites of delphacids.  Initially, it was intended to find all such records and compile them, but it was fairly quickly discovered that there are a very large number of reports of predators and parasites of delphacids (for the parasites, see table above) .  This table is just the beginning of a compilation of records of delphacid predators and parasites, and will be periodically updated.

A list of predators and parasites recorded for delphacid planthoppers.
Note:  a list of predators and parasites specific to Nilaparvata lugens can be found through the CAB International, 2005. Crop Protection Compendium, but also see link above to ricehoppers.net..
