Research Emphasis - Soil chemistry and
soil-water management, with emphasis on the
interactions between soil management practices
and environmental quality. My research program
has focused on the development and implementation
of environmentally sound soil management programs
for production agriculture and for industries and
municipalities with significant waste management
problems. I have worked extensively with the
poultry industry and production agriculture to
develop nitrogen and phosphorus management
programs that maximize crop yields while
minimizing the environmental impact of these
nutrients on ground and surface waters. My
research on soil phosphorus chemistry in coastal
plain soils has focused on phosphorus leaching
and loss to surface waters by subsurface runoff,
emphasizing the role of oxidation-reduction
reactions in controlling soil phosphorus
solubility and transport. I have also conducted
field and laboratory research on improved
approaches for organic waste management
(composting, nitrification inhibitors,
pelletization), on the use of coal fly ash as a
soil amendment and a component in synthetic
soils, on herbicide mobility and degradation in
Delaware soils, and on remediation strategies for
soils contaminated with lead and arsenic.

Research Emphasis - 1) Comparison of short-
and long-term phosphorus (P) sorption kinetics to
determine how P sorption increases with time, the
remaining P sorption capacity in the soil, and
which short-term tests with reaction times of
just hours can be used to estimate long-term P
sorption that can occur over years. 2) Using alum (aluminum
sulfate) to reduce
soluble phosphorus (P) and increase P sorption in
high P soils
