Extension Research
  • Extension educational activities include visiting growers and diagnosing plant problems in the field, writing and making disease control recommendations for all commodities, presenting disease control information at educational meetings, participating in field days and training sessions for growers, scouts, fieldmen, and Master Gardeners. He also provides information on plant disease matters to government agencies and the public. He contributes to all Extension newsletters: Ornamentals Hotline and Weekly Crop Update for commercial growers and during the potato-growing season, faxes the Potato Disease Advisory report two times a week to our potato growers and industry representatives. He also supervises the operations of the Plant Diagnostic Clinic and the Nematode Advisory Service including nematode identification and enumeration.

    Applied plant pathology research is conducted on a wide variety of crops. Fungicide efficacy and timing trials as well as variety trials for disease and nematode resistance are conducted yearly. Crops include soybeans, potatoes, small grains, corn, lima beans, and pickling cucumbers. Tests have also included ornamentals mostly rose disease control and powdery mildew on dogwood. Sentinel plots are established and monitored for soybean rust and downy mildew of cucurbits.
