People & Plants: Feast or Famine

Description:  The goal of this course is to explore plant pathology as a biological science with important ties to human welfare.  Students will gain an understanding of food production systems, famine caused by plant diseases, insects and weeds and their impact on human culture.  It is designed as a introductory discussion of the subject with no prerequisites.

Textbook:  Plant Diseases: Their Biology and Social Impact, by Gail Schuman, 1st edition, American Phytopathology Society Press, St. Paul, MN.

Schedule:  The course meets 3 hours per week and students are required to complete the assigned readings prior to each session and to be ready to discuss the material covered.  Additionally, students will participate in the development of case studies and discussions.

Grading:  The final grade will be based on a 2 midterm examinations and one final examination each worth 100 pts and discussions and case studies worth an additional 100 pts.
