Undergraduate Internship Opportunities
Internships can be a significant and very meaningful part of your college education. Participating in an undergraduate internship, such as the ones described in the following files, allows you to become involved in "hands-on" experiences and apply the knowledge you have gained in the classroom. There are many types of internships available and all can be very rewarding. Some examples include:
- Cooperating with a faculty member on a research project conducted in laboratory, greenhouse, or field settings. You can learn new skills and techniques and see how they are applied, through research, to the solution of complex soil and environmental quality problems.
- Working in private industry and learning how soil and environmental quality problems are solved by environmental consulting firms and other companies operating in the agricultural and natural resources fields. Many such companies are very multi-disciplinary in nature and you may have the chance to work with soil scientists, environmental engineers, hydrologists, field biologists, crop scientists, and others during your internship.
- Working with governmental agencies or nonprofit organizations in applied research, environmental monitoring, field demonstrations, or educational or policy-related projects. Here the goal is to apply knowledge from research to "real-world" problems and also provide guidance to those that are trying to implement solutions to problems, such as advisory or regulatory agencies and decision-makers in the community.
No matter what type of internship you choose to become involved in, the experiences you gain will be invaluable as you plan for your future.
