Rebecca Pineo

Rebecca Pineo graduated in May 2006 from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, a small liberal arts college near the intersection of the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. With a student-designed major in Living Museum Studies, minors in Environmental Studies, Spanish, and Africa & African Diaspora Studies, and study abroad experience in Central America and West Africa, Rebecca pursued a post-graduate Visitor Education Internship at Longwood Gardens. Needless to say, she fell head over heels for the field of public horticulture. Subsequent internships at University of Delaware Botanic Gardens and Adkins Arboretum fueled her newfound passion for plants, confirmed her commitment to visitor education and interpretation, and jumpstarted her interest in the sustainable landscaping movement.

Now, as a Longwood Graduate Fellow, Rebecca looks forward to experiences that will empower her to advocate for the “public” in public horticulture while promoting environmentally- and socially-responsible horticulture. Her thesis research will focus on how the landscaping industry might educate stakeholders about sustainable landscaping practices to engender acceptance for and support of such practices.
