Raakel Toppila's love for horticulture stemmed from summers working at a garden center in her hometown of Ridgeway, Ontario. She attended the Niagara Parks Commission School of Horticulture in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and earned a Diploma in Horticulture. Upon graduation she traveled to Ohio to work at The Holden Arboretum as the Education Intern. The grandeur of the west coast of Canada drew her to Vancouver, British Columbia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Plant Biology at the University of British Columbia.
