Matthew Quirey

Matthew Quirey is native to Blackwell, Oklahoma and a graduate of Oklahoma State University with a B.S. in Horticulture. While at OSU he was active in student organizations, serving as Treasurer and President of Horticulture Club, President of Pi Alpha Xi, and a member of Alpha Zeta. He also served as a horticulture intern at the Sarah P. Duke Gardens in Durham, North Carolina and Herrenhausen Gardens in Hanover, Germany.

As a child, Matthew’s love for the outdoors began by working in the family vegetable garden and annual vacations to many national parks and historic sites across the country. This love for the outdoors continued to grow during his twelve years in the Boy Scouts of America, where he ultimately achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

An avid traveler, he has studied abroad in both Austria and Germany, and has visited over fifteen countries such as England, Brazil, and Costa Rica. While traveling and seeing cultural sites and gardens, he developed a growing interest in the many historical perspectives of public horticulture. The opportunity to see many great gardens of Europe allowed him to see, first hand, what a significant resource these public gardens are to both the local and global community. Matthew plans to focus his research on the management and interpretation of these historically important cultural resources.
