James has spent the past five years studying, working and playing in some of the great gardens, nurseries and universities of the world, shamelessly stealing inspirational ideas wherever he goes. Employers have included Cambridge University, The Beth Chatto Garden and Nursery, Uppingham School, and Langthorn’s Plantery in the UK. He has also worked at Ball Horticultural Company, Floranova, Plant Delights Nursery, and Jerry Fritz Design in the USA. Positions included Gardener, Nursery Manager, Intern, Trainee, and Business Consultant.
James has developed and hosted a four-year series of lectures by international horticultural leaders, visited over 90 major public gardens in 7 countries from the USA to Iran, and has been the recipient of 3 prestigious travel scholarships. He has simultaneously earned a 1st Class BSc (Hons) in Horticulture at Writtle College, a Certificate of Higher Education in Plantsmanship at Cambridge University, and a Botanic Garden Diploma from Cambridge University Botanic Garden.
James is interested in public horticulture at the strategic level, examining how gardens articulate, develop and communicate their vision to achieve extraordinary results. Most contented when absorbed in a book, James relaxes by enjoying land art, modern architecture, business development, and classic fiction. He currently recommends Spirit, by Dan Pearson.
