Barnabas Seyler

Barnabas Seyler hails from Walkersville, Maryland, and graduated cum laude from the University of Delaware (UD) in May 2007. At that time, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree, double majoring in Landscape Horticulture and Plant Science, as well as a concurrent Bachelor of Arts degree in East Asian Studies with minors in Philosophy and Plant Biology.  Barnabas served three years as President of the Horticulture Club at UD, while an undergraduate, and completed both a horticulture internship at Biltmore Estate and an indoor display internship at Longwood Gardens.  Passionate about fostering the enjoyment of horticulture in others, Barnabas also developed a strong interest in international horticulture while participating in an undergraduate study abroad trip to China.

Hoping to encourage further international collaboration in his chosen career, his thesis research focuses on collaboration between public horticulture institutions in China and the United States. Specifically, Barnabas is researching and proposing the establishment of a Sino-American horticultural staff and educational exchange program between botanical institutions in the two countries. In pursuit of this goal, Barnabas was able to conduct semi-structured, on-site interviews with the directors and/or key members of management at eleven botanical gardens and diverse public horticulture institutions in seven provinces across China this past July. Needless to say, Barnabas feels quite fortunate for the many opportunities afforded by the Longwood Graduate Program.
