Dover - As part of the "Checkpoint Strikeforce" impaired driving prevention campaign, the following DUI checkpoints are scheduled to take place during the weekend of September23rd:
Friday September 23rd - Millsboro (DSP Troop 7) 10 p.m. - 2 a.m.
Georgetown (Sussex Co. DUI Task Force) 9 p.m. - 1 a.m.
Saturday September 24th - Newark (DSP Troop 9) 11 p.m. - 3 a.m.
In addition to the three scheduled DUI checkpoints, Troopers from Delaware State Police Troop 6 will be conducting roving DUI patrols. "Checkpoint Strikeforce" is a multi-state crackdown on impaired driving. Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia are conducting weekly DUI checkpoints between July 1, 2005 and January 1, 2006.
Every eight hours in our state someone is killed or injured in an alcohol-related crash. But impaired drivers are more concerned with getting arrested than being killed in a collision, so the Checkpoint Strikeforce campaign serves as a deterrent to those who might otherwise choose to drive after drinking alcohol, as well as actively removes impaired drivers from our roads.
In 2004 564 people were arrested for DUI during the Checkpoint Strikeforce campaign and alcohol-related traffic deaths fell to an all time low.
