Human Impact on the Environment
GOAL 1: To increase awareness, understanding, skills and information among agriculture and horticulture industry and private citizens on the most advanced property management techniques and practices shown to preserve or promote a healthy environment.
- Sub-goal 1.1: To increase understanding of best managemnet practices for lawns and gardens among gardeners, landowners and grounds managers.
- Objective 1.1.1: Participants will use soil test results to guide fertilizer nad lime applications on lawns, crops, pastures and gardens.
- Objective 1.1.2: Participants will learn how to use Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles to reduce the need for pesticide treatment of ornamental and crop plants.
- Objective 1.1.3: Participants will increase awareness and understanding of the effects of summer lawn irrrigation on turf health and water quality.
- Sub-goal 1.2: To increase awareness of the effets of waste and hazardous materials form home and business activites on the environment, and ways to prevent or reduce waste and hazardous materials porblems.
- Objective 1.2.1: Citizens will receive information and training in handling, storing and disposing of wastes and hazardous materials.
- Objective 1.2.2: Citizens will receive training and information on how to implement home- or commercial-scale composting.
- Objective 1.2.3: Citizens wil receive training and information on assssing the risks of hazardous conditions in and around the home and farm.
- Sub-goal 1.3: to increase awareness among citizens of the impacts of water use on water suply and water quality.
- Objective 1.3.1: citizens will receive training and information on water conservation practices for lawns and gardens.
- Objective 1.3.2: citizens will receive training and information in protecting water supply fro non-point source pollution (NPS).
- Sub-goal 1.4: to increase awreness, understanding and implementation of safe paesticide practices in homes, institutions, growing operations and businesses.
- Objective 1.4.1: Citizens will receive training and information in porper selection, storage and use of pesticids.
- Objective 1.4.2: Citizens will receive training and infomation in non-chemical pest-control techniques.
- Objective 1.4.3: Citizens will receive trainng and information in the state certification porgram for private, commercial and institutional pesticide applicators.
- Sub-goal 1.5: To increase awareness, understanding and preservation or development of wildlife habitat on public and private landds.
- Objective 1.5.1: Citizens will receive training and information in wildlife habitat extablishement, imporevement and maintenance.
- Objective 1.5.2: Citizens will receive training and infomration on the importance of wildlife habitat to environmental quality and qualtiy-of-life.
GOAL 2: To increase aswraeness, understanding and information among all citizens regarding environmental quality issues (air, land and water) through public discourse and action.
- Objective 2.1: Participants will gain knowledge in environmental issues relevant to New Castle County.
- Objective 2.2: Citizens will make decisions in public issues concerning the environment.
