Alcohol Awareness

Drinking and driving is a persistent traffic-related problem for New Castle County. The Delaware State Police Annual 2002 Report indicates there were 555 traffic injuries attributed to alcohol consumption. The number of fatalities involving alcohol-related crashes was 20 in New Castle County out of the state total of 46. More statistics.

The Transportation Research Board unit of the National Research Council in their February 1995 circular documented the success of community traffic safety programs (CTSP).

Driving Under the Influence (DUI), defined as 0.10 or greater blood alcohol level or any illicit drug is illegal in Delaware. Adults age 21 and older who violate this law may have their driving priviledges revoked or suspended. The City of Newark has passed .08 legislation.

Younger drivers are over represented in alcohol-related crashes. The Zero-Tolerance Law was passed to address underage drinkers who then drive.
