4-H members take a stand to help fight against youth smoking. In 2000, New Castle County 4-H began the youth smoking prevention program called Health Rocks. The curriculum focuses primarily on youth from ages 8-12 in an after school environment. The program is intended to teach a wide range of children from all different backgrounds and environments. The Health Rocks Program is intended to help children make decisions for themselves based on what they know about life skills. Stress reduction, communication, and self-esteem are just some of the skills taught during the program. The Health Rocks Program is unique in that it helps youth build valuable life skills while making their own informed decisions as to why they shouldn't smoke. This program has been funded by a grant from the Office of Prevention and Early Intervention.
