IPM - Sorghum Sampling Guidelines
Growth Stage: Preplant
Pest Sampling Method
White Grubs, Wireworm Sample one square foot of soil 6 inches deep, take one sample for every 10 acres and a minimum of 5 samples per field
Growth Stage: Seedling to Early Whorl
Cutworm Examine 10 plants in 10 locations and count the number of cut plants
Thrips Examine 10 plants in 10 locations and count the number of plants with damage; note if plants are stressed/yellowing/wilting
Grasshoppers Examine the number of grasshoppers per square yard
Growth Stage: Mid-Whorl to Boot
Corn leaf aphid, Greenbug Examine 10 plants in 10 sites and estimate the number of aphids/plant, characterize the degree of plant damage(red spotting, yellowing, plant death) and note the level of beneficial insect activity
European corn borer, Corn earworm, Fall armyworm Examine 10 plants in 10 locations and count the number of infested plants
Growth Stage: Grain Head Emergence to Maturity
Sorghum Midge Examine 5 plants in 10 sites by placing a plastic bag quickly over each head and counting the number of midges per head; should be done early morning or evening when flies are most active
Corn Earworm, Fall Armyworm, Sorghum Webworm Shake 10 heads in 10 locations over a white piece of paper and count the number of larvae dislodged from each head
