Rain Garden

The garden was built on the lowest corner of the Urban Environmental Center's property in downtown Wilmington.

  • Funded by: New Castle County Master Gardeners
  • Cost:
  • Designers: Karin Arentzen, Jennifer Adkins and Dolores Washam
  • Size: 525 square feet
  • Runoff area: Roofs from nearby buildings totaling 4950 square feet
  • Completed:

Construction:

  • Depth:  It is below grade and was excavated to a depth of 9" to 12"
  • Fill: Some of the excavated soil was then replaced
  • Overflow: No outlet was needed
  • Plant material: Native trees, shrubs, and flowers

Education:

  • School groups and others with gardening interest visit the garden.
  • A Master Gardener Workshop on Rain Gardeners was planned.

Lessons Learned:

  • It is rather shady which limits the variety of plants that would survive; more sun would be nice.

ACCESSIBILITY: The rain garden is available for viewing by appointment.  See contact information below.
