Arden Rain Garden

Arden green rain gardenArden Green, Wilmington
The garden was built on the lower corner of the village green to collect runoff from the field.

  • Funded by: an EPA grant
  • Cost:
  • Designers: landscape architect Sue Mrugal and Dave Athey of TetraTech
  • Size: about 150 square feet
  • Runoff area: village green
  • Completed: 1998

Construction:

  • Depth: 4 inches below grade, excavated to a depth of 4 ½ feet
  • Fill: A foot of sand was laid in the bottom; the rest was filled with a mix of excavated soil and sand
  • Overflow: A path of riverstone leads overflow water to a storm water drain
  • Plant material: Native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants
  • Extras: A mound was built on the lower edge of the garden to collect the runoff.

Education:

  • A brochure on the purpose of rain gardens and how to build them
  • Tours offered on Wilmington Garden Day and for groups from Delaware Nature Center and University of Delaware Gardeners
  • Featured in the News Journal .
