What is 4-H Summer of Service?

The 4-H, Summer of Service program has operated in New Castle County , successfully, for several years. This program reaches youth in grades 5-8, usually implemented in two week sessions throughout the summer. Monday through Thursday youth participate in structured community service activities at sites such as the Delaware Food Bank, State Parks and the Delaware State Fair. On Fridays youth participants participate in reflection activities as well as recreation. We have learned that campers felt good about the service they had completed. An additional benefit is that research shows that kids who participate in structured community service do better in school than those who do not do service. Many of past camp participants were eager to return and felt that they had many things to share with their teachers upon returning to school in September.

The Summer of Service Camp is funded by a grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP).
