Genus Delphacodes Fieber, 1866

Overview - Delphacodes Fieber

Family Delphacidae Leech, 1815

Subfamily Delphacinae Leech, 1815

Tribe Delphacini Leech, 1815

Genus Delphacodes Fieber, 1866: 524.

Distribution: Delphacodes in the strict sense is a western Palearctic genus (with 10 species); however, currently there are species placed in this genus from all over the world.

Type species (In original combination):  Delphax mulsanti Fieber, 1866. (designated by Kirkaldy 1904: 177)

Recognized species

By my count, there are 164 species currently placed in this genus.  However, following Asche & Remane (1983), there are only 10 species legitimately placed in this genus.

There has been confusion regarding the definition and composition of DelphacodesDelphacodes is discussed (among others) by Muir & Giffard (1924), Haupt (1935), China (1954), Dlabola (1957, 1961), Linnavuori (1957), Nast (1958), Wagner (1963) and Le Quesne (1964).  The modern definition of Delphacodes follows Asche & Remane (1983).

Species list: Delphacodes sensu stricto - Distribution information for Old World species may be incomplete.

These species are Delphacodes in the strict sense and all others placed in the genus are of uncertain status.

Distribution information may be incomplete.

Economic Importance

While most species of "Delphacodes" are obscure or rarely encountered, a variety of species have been found in agricultural crops and may serve as potential vectors of plant disease.

Delphacodes kuscheli is a vector of Mal de Rio Cuarto (MRCV) in corn in South America.

Delphacodes catilina Fennah, 1958 (as "Toya catilina") is a vector of Maize mosaic nucleorhabdovirus (VIDE Rhabdoviridae) (see also here) (as "African Cereal Streak Virus") (Harder and Bakker 1973; Abo and Sy 1997).

Molecular Resources

Genbank lists molecular data at this time for 16 species of Delphacodes, all New World species, of which 10 are currently placed in Delphacodes (viz. Delphacodes acuministyla, D. andromeda, D. detecta, D. emeljanovi, D. kuscheli, D. lutea, D. nigrifacies, D. penedetecta , D. puella, and D. sagae).  Of the remaining 4, Delphacodes atralabis, D. campestris, and Delphacodes rotundata are now in Muirodelphax (the latter two Muirodelphax arvensis and M. parvula respectively); 2 are in Syndelphax (D. alexanderi, D. fulvidorsum) and Delphacodes lutulenta is now in Kosswigianella.

BOLD has 24 species of Delphacodes at this time, although several are no longer Delphacodes.
