There are over 50 delphacid species of economic importance (see table below). Of these, the most important species are the brown planthopper (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens), a pest of rice in the Old World tropics and adjacent temperate regions; Sogatella and Tagosodes species (the white-backed planthoppers, the white-backed planthopper is Sogatella furcifera, WBPH); also on rice; the small brown planthopper (SBPH, Laodelphax striatellus) on rice and cereals; Saccharosydne saccharivora, Eumetopina flavipes, and various Perkinsiella species (especially P. saccharicida sometimes called that sugarcane planthopper, on sugarcane, and the corn planthopper (Peregrinus maidis).
Important planthoppers not found in North America are:
1. The brown planthopper (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens)

2. The small brown planthopper (SBPH, Laodelphax striatellus)

3. The whitebacked planthopper (WBPH, Sogatella furcifera)

4. The island sugarcane planthopper (Eumetopina flavipes)
