Meaning: neuro = nerve; ptera = wing

Pronunciation: n-ROP-ter-a

Common name(s): lacewings, dobsonflies, antlions

Mouthparts: chewing

Wings: 2 pr. - many veins, membraneous usually held roof-like over abdomen

Metamorphosis: holometabolous

Body characteristics:

    adults

    many veined, membraneous wings

    large eyes, long antennae

    larvae

    aquatic forms have abdominal gills

    terrestrial forms have well developed mouthparts

Where found: some aquatic, others terrestrial among vegetation or in ground

Economic impact: important predators (aquatic forms as larvae)

Size of order: 4700 species
