  • M.S., Entomology and Applied Ecology,University of Delaware, January 1992. (GPA: 4.0) Thesis Title: "Factors Affecting Predation Rates on Artificial Avian Nests in Forest Fragments."  Advisor: R. R. Roth.
  • B.S., Wildlife Management, Forestry minor, University of Vermont, May 1987.
Current Courses
  • Insect Taxonomy (ENWC 406/606)
  • Field Taxonomy (ENWC 408/608)
  • Insect Structure and Function (ENWC 405/605)
  • Larval Taxonomy (ENWC 602)
Research
  • Primary interest in the alpha-taxonomy of delphacid planthoppers (Hemiptera: Fulgoroidea: Delphacidae), particularly of the New World.  More broadly interested in the taxonomy, biodiversity, host relations, and biogeography of planthoppers.
  • Director of University of Delaware Insect Reference Collection.  The University of Delaware collection contains ca. 350,000 pinned specimens plus ~500 slides and ~2,500 alcohol specimens.  I am responsible for all aspects of the collection including outgoing and incoming loans, accessions, visitors, curation, and general organization.
Current Projects
  • Higher systematics of the delphacid planthoppers (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) of the world (with Jason Cryan, New York State Museum).
  • Auchenorrhyncha of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park (supported by Discover Life in America and National Park Service).
  • Keys to genera, with species checklist (including synonyms), for planthoppers north of Mexico, with particular emphasis on western USA (with Lois O’Brien & Steve Wilson).
  • Revision of select delphacid genera.  Most recently completed was a revision of the genera Toya and Metadelphax (With Anthony Gonzon).  Work is in progress revising the genus Tetrasteira, describing some new species in the genus Megamelus, and some newdelphacid genera from Florida, Mexico, and Peru.
