Our most recent intern in the Garden, begging in April 2013 to help us plan, coordinate and work the Garden is Thomas Soares. During his internship he will gain valuable experience in horticulture, volunteer coordination, and communications.

Meet our 2013 intern:

Thomas Soares

Tom was born and raised in Santa Rosa, California but moved to Elverson, PA in February of 2007. Now as a Junior he studies Environmental and Resource Economics in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. He is excited to be a part of the project and gain experience in the production of fruits and vegetables as well as give back to the community. He brings with him teamwork experience when he participated in volunteer conservation work in the Galapagos Islands last summer and teaching experience from a part-time tennis instructor job in Newark. Outside of the College of Agriculture, Tom is a member of the Kappa Delta Rho fraternity and Club Tennis.

This 2012 intern was:

Owen Cass

Owen is from Newark, Delaware. As a junior Plant Science major, he is delighted to gain additional hands-on experience with vegetable production systems and excited to share his enthusiasm with the volunteers. No stranger to hard work, he brings with him experience and passion from a yearlong stint working with Coffeld Farms in Washington where he gained extensive training in vegetable crop production. Owen also worked for three seasons on a variety of landscape horticulture projects. When not in the Garden, he can be found tending to his own garden and beehives at home, cooking, bicycling, and making pottery.

The 2011 intern was:

Renee Connor

Renee is from Severn, Maryland. She is a senior in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, double majoring in Natural Resource Management and Political Science. She is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society, and is the Director of Special Events for Delta Gamma Fraternity. Besides gardening, Renn also gets exercise with the UD Women's Rugby Football Club.

The 2010 interns were:

Dan Ford

Dan is from Hillsborough, New Jersey. He graduated from UD in May 2011 double-majored in Wildlife Conservation and Entomology.  In addition to his involvement with the Garden, Dan worked part-time with the USDA-ARS Beneficial Insects Introduction Research Unit in Newark, Delaware. Outside of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dan was a member of the University of Delaware Drumline and Pep Band, and was found showing his school spirit at every Blue Hen football game and basketball game.

 

Christine Gordy

Christine is from Seaford, Delaware. She graduated from UD in May 2011 and majored in Landscape Horticulture and Design. She spends her spare time roto-tilling her yard and doing residential landscaping projects. Christine was an intern with the University of Delaware Botanic Gardens in 2008, helping to implement their Lepidoptera Trail. During her time at UD, Christine wrote for the UD Review, acted in E-52 student theater, and attended field trips with the Horticulture Club.
