Marasco Named 4-H Wildlife Volunteer of the Year

Becky Marasco of Wyoming has been named the 2005 Wildlife and Fisheries Adult Volunteer of the Year by Delaware 4-H for her work and dedication to the environment. She is also one of six volunteers in the country to be recognized nationally by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. A 4-H volunteer for four years, she specializes in environmental projects for youth.

Marasco was a University of Delaware Cooperative Extension renewable resources educator for four years until leaving in 2001 to raise a family. As an Extension educator, she worked with the woodland classroom, for which she developed the “Water, Wildlife and You” and “Soil, Water and Nutrient Management” curricula. These are interactive programs designed to encourage children in a deeper appreciation for the environment.

As a 4-H volunteer she has continued her work in environmental protection by training other volunteers and 4-Hers in Wildlife Habitat. In addition, she has coached the State Wildlife Team, which qualified last year for the national competition. Marasco has also assisted with training Envirothon teams and serves on the state Envirothon planning team.

Marasco says she finds working with 4-H to be fulfilling and enriching. “It is so much fun to work with 4-Hers in the natural resources area,” she said. “It is very satisfying to watch youngsters hold their first grass shrimp or follow the slithering trail of a snake that we startled in the wild.

“The family atmosphere 4-H creates is wonderful experience for children,” she adds. “They learn many life skills through the 4-H program, and I hope my little ones will get to enjoy the 4-H family when they get old enough to participate.”
