What do you like about the UD College of Agriculture and Natural Resources?
What I admire about the College of Ag because it is a close knit college where professors and students are able to communicate with one another and share ideas. The professors are easily accessible for individual help and attention. The College of Ag offers students a wide variety of opportunities for learning and obtaining experiences in their field of study. I found that the entire South Campus ground is a classroom for students to become engaged with hands on experience. I believed that hands-on learning is one of the best methods of understanding concepts that are being taught.
What is your most memorable Ag or UD experience?
There have been many memorable experiences at UD but my sheep lab from ANFS 111 lab was one of my most memorable. I enjoyed the experience of giving hands on care to the sheep. Not only did it enable me to prevent sheep from getting foot rot by trimming their nails but it was the closest I've ever been to one. The entire class really enjoyed themselves. Opportunities such as this that allow me to experience hands-on with the animals has given me the reassurance and desire to pursue my career as a veterinarian.
What are your career goals?
My career goal is to go to veterinary school and receive a DVM. I then plan working on small animals at a private practice. I also aspire to work at organizations such as the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind Inc. so I can treat service animals for the visually impaired or returning veterans with PTSD or prosthetic limbs.
What is an interesting or unusual fact about you?
I am an Eagle Scout and a merit badge counselor for Dog Care. I did my service project at my local animal shelter by building a bird sanctuary in front of the outdoor cat room. I am sure the cats love seeing birds flying down (along with the roaming chickens and peacocks)! One of the reasons I chose to build the sanctuary was to make the animal shelter have a curb side appeal so that passersby would be attracted to the shelter and hopefully stop and adopt animals.
What is your favorite book, movie, or song?
My favorite book is I Am Legend by Richard Matheson. My favorite movie is Patton and my favorite song is What's Left of the Flag by Flogging Molly.
