ADVISEMENT INFORMATION:
Discovery Learning Experience (DLE) Requirement
As part of the Signature Experience at the University of Delaware, all undergraduate students are required to take at least three credits of a Discovery Learning Experience. A Discovery Learning Experience is discovery-based and experiential learning that involves instructional experiences out-of-class and beyond typical curriculum courses. These enrichment experiences exist for students under the supervision of a faculty member. All undergraduate students entering UD in September 2005 or later are required to take at least three credits of a Discovery Learning Experience; this includes transfer students, readmitted students, or those who began their career in the AA or CEND programs in 2005 Fall or later.
The only exceptions are:
1. Transfer students who began their career at another institution prior to 2005F, and accumulated at least 12 credits that have been posted to the UD record.
2. Students who began their careers in Continuing Education, in the Associate in Arts program, in the Parallel Program or in another UD program/major prior to 2005F, and accumulated at least 12 credits, which must show on the UD transcript. This includes students who may have been previously enrolled at UD and have been readmitted after medical, personal or academic leave.
To verify if you are exempt from this requirement, please contact Dean Karen Aniunas at kra@udel.edu.
Fulfilling Your Requirement:
All undergraduate students entering UD in September 2005 or later can satisfy the requirement of a Discovery Learning Experience if three credits are registered and successfully completed prior to September 2008 in one of the following ways: internship, service learning, independent study, undergraduate research program, or a study abroad program. Other possibilities are student teaching and technical practicum. The key is that you MUST register for credits (a total of 3, split into several experiences or done as one 3-credit experience.)
After September 2008, there will be specific, approved and designated courses and experiences that will have DLE designation, and ONLY those experiences and courses will count to fulfill this requirement. It is recommended that you work on your DLE as soon as possible, to better your chances of an experience being grandfathered in. If you have any questions as to whether you have already fulfilled this requirement, please talk with your advisor or send email to Karen Aniunas at kra@udel.edu.
