We have been receiving questions about mushrooms or toadstools coming up in landscapes. Fungi are natural decomposers doing what they do best, and usually will not harm plantings.

New virus confirmed in Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia soybeans. We have seen samples from DE and MD with unusual leaf spot symptoms that are often limited to the veins. There is a yellowing and reddening of the tissue and veins. The symptoms can progress to a necrosis of the tissue around the veins as well. This virus disease, soybean vein necrosis virus, has been confirmed by PCR for samples from all three counties in Delaware. Symptoms can resemble Phyllosticta leaf spot or Cercospora leaf blight caused by Cercospora kikuchii, which also causes purple seed stain.

THOUSAND CANKERS DISEASE OF WALNUT HAS BEEN DETECTED IN PENNSYLVANIA
Thousand Cankers Disease of Walnut was confirmed on August 9, 2011 in Bucks County, PA. This find comes three weeks after the find in Virginia. This disease may already be present in our area, but has not been detected. We do not have large stands of walnut trees, most are in residential neighborhoods and most may be in New Castle County. Now is the time to be on the lookout for dying walnut trees showing thinning of branches and canopy. Samples should be submitted to the UD Plant Diagnostic Clinic. Please see the PA press release:

THOUSAND CANKERS DISEASE OF WALNUT HAS BEEN DETECTED IN CENTRAL VIRGINIA
The Virginia Department of Agriculture has detected Thousand Cankers Disease (TCD) in central Virginia along the I-95 corridor. A quarantine is in place against movement of walnut trees and related products. TCD is a disease that attacks walnut trees, Juglans spp. The causal fungus Geosmithia morbida is carried by the walnut twig beetle, Pityophthorus juglandis. Small cankers form under the bark of the tree, it worsens and ultimately trees die. Dieback in the tops of trees is usually the first symptom. This find is the first time the disease has been found east of Tennessee. VA press release: http://www.vdacs.virginia.gov/news/releases-b/072111tcd.shtml

Update - Imprelis Herbicide Damage
Damage to trees in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey followed commercial applications of a relatively new broadleaf turfgrass herbicide from DuPont called Imprelis (aminocyclopyrachlor). We cannot actually test for the chemical residue, so the diagnosis remains as “suspected”.
Monitor the affected trees. Imprelis should leach readily from sandier soils.
DuPont has created a web site to deal with cutomer questions and posted a hotline number:
